Theological Question of the Week

With Lent starting Wednesday I was thinking about the practice of giving stuff up or taking stuff on for the season of Lent. Do you plan to participate in this practice if no why not and if so what do you plan to give up or take on?

I can't believe how quickly Lent has come upon me this year; I don't yet feel mentally prepared. But, then, I guess that's sort of what Lent is for, to help one get mentally prepared for Easter. Hopefully the Ash Wednesday service will help put me in the proper frame of mind.

I don't think I need to give up cookies or chocolate or caffeine again this year. I've done those things in the past, but this year those rituals aren't speaking to me.

I think, instead, that I'll work on some concrete goals for being a better me, and concentrate on holding to those small and measurable goals through Lent, and hopefully beyond.

I decided to take on daily devotional reading and chose Henri Nouwen's Show Me the Way as my guide.
I surfed through a number of reviews of different Lenten devotional books online and decided this one looked good.

Lent snuck up on me as well. I'm scrambling to get 3 Bible studies, extra services, and Spring Break planned. so maybe i'm giving up sleep? I hope not though. I hope to take on a period of silence each day-- 5 minutes or so? we'll see how that goes.

I plan to read through the Gospels during Lent. I will post some of my reflections on my blog -- as well as the passages I am reading each day.
