Monday Question of the Week . . . Vacation Bible School sometimes is no Vacation

Today was the first day of our Vacation Bible School. Our theme this year is fairly unique, its hot air balloons and its nice to have something different. I am teaching the science section and today was fun but I am tired. As I was thinking of various themes that have been trendy the past years (jungle, bugs, safari) and I thought it might be funny to share our most horrific VBS stories? Bad themes? Out of control directors? I know some of you out there have some great ones, why not share them with us?

Here's my entry. It happened about 3 years ago.

On the first day of VBS, after all the kids had been checked in, one of the teachers reported a missing child. The boy was a 5th grader who did not attend the church but whose grandmother did. She enrolled him and signed him in that morning.

Given his age and lack of familiarity with the church, we assumed he was unhappy and took off. We looked in every nook and cranny of the church. Two teenage helpers combed the banks of the creek behind the church and drove the route back to his grandmother's house in case he tried to walk back there.

Grandmother didn't answer her phone at home. The VBS director had a total meltdown about midmorning. She was ready to call the police. Finally I found the enrollment information with his mother's phone number on it.

I called and she was at home. So was he. It turned out that she let him "sleep in" that morning. Grandmother was to meet them at the church. Grandmother signed him in thinking he was coming, then got a call from Mom saying he wasn't coming that day. Grandmother left without informing anyone that he wasn't there after all!!

VBS that year went downhill from there. It was not a good year.
