Martin Luther King, Jr. & Race Relations Sunday

Sorry for the short hiatus in posting but I have been under the weather the past few day.

With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day next week and Race Relations Sunday on February 12 the PC (USA) web site has posted resources for both of these observances. Does your congregation recognize either of these days? If so how? And if no, why do you thing they have chosen not to do so?

  1. We're somewhat multicultural here, and have a history in the civil rights movement, so we usually have at the very least a prayer on sunday. This year I think my sermon will focus in on MLK, relating to the scriptures as following when you're called-- I Sam. 3 and John 1: 43-51. We recently welcomed Girls Inc to use our building after school every day, so I think I'll tie this in as a way we're responding to God in our community.

  2. Members of our choir once sang "Shed a Little Light" (James Taylor): Let us turn our thoughts today to Martin Luther King. I loved it but certainly there were folks in the pews that wondered what was up.

Great line: "There's a feeling like of clenching of a fist."

  3. For some reason our choir sings "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" every MLK Sunday since the mind of man and woman runneth not to the contrary. It would be nice if they picked a new anthem this year--we'll see.

MLK may be mentioned in the sermon, or not. The church office will be open on Monday, which reflects the preference of the senior pastor. Most businesses in the area are open although the schools and banks are closed.
